Outline the Ceiling with Fairy Lights
If you are after a neat and streamlined look, a good option is to hang fairy lights or led string lights from the edges of your ceiling.
What You Will Need
- Tape measure
- Adhesive or screw hooks
- Extension cord
- Drill
- Lights of your choosing
Step One: Outline the corners of the ceiling using your hooks. They should be placed at least two feet apart.
Step Two: Use an extension cord to connect the fairy lights to the power source, and begin stringing your LED string lights along the first hook.
Step Three: Keep going, fitting the next hook and stringing it around the same way you did the first one. Keep going around the ceiling, hook after hook, until you reach the last one.

Drape String Lights
Draping string lights is a great way to make your LED string lights feel relaxed and more random than outlining them. Don’t think too much about how you are hanging them/the order, but simply hang them from the ceiling and let them come down.
What you will need
- Adhesive hooks
- Fairy lights
Step one: Start by placing the sticky hooks from one side of the ceiling to the other.
Step two: Starting at the nearest hook on the ceiling, turn on the power.
Step three: Wrap the LED string lights around the hook and let them hang down, moving up to the next hook afterwards. Remember, they can hang down in any way you want them to.

Use Zigzag Pattern
Overlap your fairy lights in a zigzag pattern across the ceiling to cover a lot of space.
What You Will Need
- Tape measure
- Adhesive or screw hooks
- Extension cord
- Drill
- String fairy lights
Step one: Use a tape measure to measure the length and width of your ceiling, choosing an adequate distance between anchor points on it. 2-3 feet between points will create a soft lighting atmosphere.
Step two: Use adhesive or screw hooks and put them on the ceiling.
Step three: Run a light string extension cord along the corner of the wall to the light’s electrical plug. This will prevent them hanging down onto the electrical outlet and spoiling the overall effect.
Step four: Space each hook along your required distance, going all the way from one side of the ceiling to the other.
Step five: Do the same thing on the other side of the ceiling, moving it half the distance from the other side instead of lining them up evenly.
Step six: String the fairy lights together starting with the hook closest to the electrical outlet, and moving along to the next one until the ceiling is covered.

Hanging Fairy Light Headboard
This is an easy thing to do and uses a curtain to diffuse the effect.
What You Will Need
- Tape measure
- Extension cord
- Curtain rod
- Adhesive/screw-on command hooks
- Chiffon drape fabric
- Fairy lights
- Hand saw
- Drill
Step one: Using a tape measure, measure the width of the existing headboard.
Step two: Cut the curtain road to the needed length.
Step three: Place the screw control hooks on opposite sides of the curtain rod, making sure you leave a few inches of space on both sides.
Step four: Remove the rod, placing the smaller hook behind where the curtain rod is. This will hold the fairy lights in place.
Step five: Starting at the power plug end, string the lights onto each lower level hook and let it hang above the headboard.
Step six: Once done, insert the curtain rod into the curtains and hang them up.
