Our easy to follow step-by-step instructions will guide you through building string light poles on a deck.
Step One: Secure the Pole to Post
The first step in this DIY project is to secure the pole to the deck railing post. Begin by using long zip ties to attach the pole firmly to the post. This ensures stability and prevents the pole from swaying in the wind.Photo from shutterstock
Step Two: Attach the Bracket
Next is to use an electric drill, drill one screw into either side of the bracket, attaching it to the deck railing post. Use the level again to make sure the pole is still straight.

Step Three: Set the Cup Hooks
If your pole does not come with its own hooks, you’ll need to set cup hooks to hang the string lights. Using a drill, secure the hooks to the pole with the hook facing upwards. This allows for easy installation and removal of the lights. However, if your pole already has built-in hooks, you can skip this step and proceed directly to hanging the lights.

Step Four: Hang the String Lights
Test the lights first to ensure they work, and screw out the bulbs. Additionally, unscrew the bulbs from the sockets to prevent breakage during installation. Once tested, attach the light cord to each pole, ensuring a secure fit. Begin by fixing the cord to the hooks or brackets previously installed, spacing them evenly along the length of the pole.Photo from shutterstock
Step Five: Screw in the Bulbs
With the light cords securely in place, it’s time to screw in the bulbs and connect them to the sockets. Take care not to overtighten the bulbs to avoid damaging the sockets. Once all bulbs are installed, step back and admire your handiwork.Photo from shutterstock
